Christening preparations

Here are a few photos of the theme of my little one's Christening that is soon approaching: cherubs, a bit of a vintage feel with loads of pink splashes, embroidery, crochet, lace and a hint of sand, white, and turquoise to pay tribute to the Ionian sea, particularly Lefkada and Preveza where it is going to take place. The invitations, the bomboniere, the "martyrika" (witness pins), even the candle are made by mama herself (that's me, oh yes). A big "thank you" to my friend Γιώργος who helped me with the printing and graphic design. Behind the thought cloud pops her precious name...for more photos, wait until after the big event!

House of Memories: Before

Amid post-doc application forms, nappies, books, playdoh marathons, and mountains of clothes stoically waiting to be ironed, in a house full of newly founded girly anima and childish exuberance, the thought that has been occupying the mind is another house: an empty house. A house full of memories of long summer holidays, of laughter and occasionally of tears. As it awaits its refurbishment, it very often sends messages-reminders through the Ionian Sea to come soon and occupy it again. This is its "before", or to be more accurate, its current state: dusty, decadent, in need of architectural TLC from its descendants. It is a house "interrupted" (as the late Derrida would have it). So, it will resume in all its glory. Shortly.

Lefkadian Magic Carpet

This stunning all-time-classic hand-made carpet with geometric patterns was made by my grandmother's grandmother in Kavalos village in the Greek island of Lefkada  more than 150 years ago.  For the past couple of weeks it has been lying full of colour on our Irish floor and it seems more contemporary and glorious than ever. Funny how mater travels in time and space. I bet if you told those hard-working and proud Lefkadian women that their artwork would end up two centuries later in Ireland they would not believe you, as mum said. This was a bridal dowry that was handed from generation to generation until it reached me. The natural colours used to dye the threads include walnuts, poppies, and egg yolks, among others! The wise art of poverty could show us one or two things about home economy in the present. My great great great great great great-grandmother I salute your imagination and your skilled fingers !

Μια βάφτιση, μια μικρή ιστορία /Α christening, a little tale.

Last summer we got our daughter christened in Tinos island, the birthplace of my late father. The godparents were Eleni and Gavin, the priest Father Stanislaus, the guests the whole village, friends and relatives from Greece and Ireland, the bomboniere were made by me and my mum, the photographers were the guests themselves, the video-recording was Konstantino's, the cakes were made thanks to the hard work of the women of the village. Τhe invitations were based on a simple idea: they depicted motifs taken from my own 33-year-old christening blanket, a processed photo of the church of Sotiras, and details from an embroidery my aunt Eleni had created on the birth sheets of our little one. In other words, they were telling a story: a family story.

I spent many evenings photocopying with my aunt Markella, folding sheets of paper, tying bows...The godmother got inspired to create the martyrika with a lot of love: she made bracelets for the girls and begleria for the boys. And Markos found the lovely lanterns and the balloοns for the decorations. So, while I was in the final stages of my PhD submission, I left everything behind me for a week to devote myself to this work along with the whole family and our friends. It was the best break, a true production of love from all those who took part in this holy event. We wanted to give an emphasis on tradition and the very religious sentiment. And here is the final result:
