Wish List: Sofi Moukidou Jewellery

These are just a few pieces by Greek jewellery designer Sofi Moukidou that have captured my imagination lately. Sofi who is based in Thessaloniki combines original designs with unconventional combinations and materials to produce stylish, timeless and very modern creations. Check out her great work here.

Figue de barbarie

Το φραγκόσυκο (Opuntia ficus-indica)είναι καρπός της κακτοειδούς φραγκοσυκιάς. Φρούτο Αμερικανικής προέλευσης που φυτρώνει στην Ελλάδα τρώγεται κατά προτίμηση κρύο και το καθαρίζουμε με μαχαίρι κρατώντας το παράλληλα με πηρούνι για να μην μας ενοχλούν τα αγκάθια του.

Fig Jam/ Μαρμελάδα Σύκο

1 kg mature figs

800 gr sugar

3 tablespoons lemon juice
a pinch of cinnamon


Peel the figs from their skin and mash them with the sugar into a bowl. Transfer into a casserole and bring to the boil adding in the end the cinnamon and the lemon juice. The jam is ready when it is not "runny". When cooled down put into glass jars and keep them in the fridge.

1 κιλό ώριμα σύκα

800 γραμμάρια ζάχαρη

3 κουταλάκια χυμό λεμονιού
λίγη κανέλα


Ξεφλουδίζουμε τα σύκα και τα λιώνουμε σε μια λεκάνη μαζί με τη ζάχαρη (πουρέ). Τα βάζουμε σε σιγανή φωτιά μέχρι να βράσουν και στο τέλος προσθέτουμε το χυμό λεμονιού και την κανέλα. Η μαρμελάδα είναι έτοιμη όταν "δέσει". Όταν κρυώσει την βάζουμε σε γυάλινα βαζάκια και την διατηρούμε στο ψυγείο.

Lefkadian Magic Carpet

This stunning all-time-classic hand-made carpet with geometric patterns was made by my grandmother's grandmother in Kavalos village in the Greek island of Lefkada  more than 150 years ago.  For the past couple of weeks it has been lying full of colour on our Irish floor and it seems more contemporary and glorious than ever. Funny how mater travels in time and space. I bet if you told those hard-working and proud Lefkadian women that their artwork would end up two centuries later in Ireland they would not believe you, as mum said. This was a bridal dowry that was handed from generation to generation until it reached me. The natural colours used to dye the threads include walnuts, poppies, and egg yolks, among others! The wise art of poverty could show us one or two things about home economy in the present.My great great great great great great-grandmother I salute your imagination and your skilled fingers !

Tο κουτί της Πανδώρας/ Pandora's Box

Ένα πακέτο από την Αθήνα έφτασε και αυτή την εβδομάδα στο κατώφλι μας. Αποστολέας, η μανούλα μου-και πλέον γιαγιά- που δε χαλάει χατήρια. Στέλνει τάχα μου-τάχα μου πράγματα που ξέχασα πίσω και στον πάτο κρύβει και μια δεκάδα Lacta σοκολάτες (τουλάχιστον).  Χτες το "κουτί της Πανδώρας" έκρυβε δυο ειδών προσωπικές μου αδυναμίες που καθώς φαίνεται έχουν μεταβιβαστεί γονιδιακώς (άραγε;) στην κόρη μου. Και η μοιρασιά είναι πάντα δίκαια: "τρώει η μάνα" και δίνει και του παιδιού 3/1.

This week again, a packet from Athens arrived at our threshold. Its sender, my mum- and now a granny-who never refuses a favour. She supposedly posts things I forgot back home and at the bottom she hides ten packets of Lacta chocolate (at least). Yesterday, "Pandora's box" contained two kinds of personal "soft spots" that have been genetically (I wonder?) transmitted to my daughter. And the sharing is always fair: "the mother eats" and she offers the child too, 3/1.
