Wish List: Sofi Moukidou Jewellery

These are just a few pieces by Greek jewellery designer Sofi Moukidou that have captured my imagination lately. Sofi who is based in Thessaloniki combines original designs with unconventional combinations and materials to produce stylish, timeless and very modern creations. Check out her great work here.

Figue de barbarie

Το φραγκόσυκο (Opuntia ficus-indica)είναι καρπός της κακτοειδούς φραγκοσυκιάς. Φρούτο Αμερικανικής προέλευσης που φυτρώνει στην Ελλάδα τρώγεται κατά προτίμηση κρύο και το καθαρίζουμε με μαχαίρι κρατώντας το παράλληλα με πηρούνι για να μην μας ενοχλούν τα αγκάθια του.

Προετοιμασίες καλοκαιριού. 

Pancake Tuesday

250 γρ. αλεύρι 

500 γρ. γάλα

3 αυγά

λίγη ζάχαρη

Ανακατέψτε το αλεύρι, τα αυγά και τη ζάχαρη μαζί προσθέτοντας γάλα και ανακατεύοντας καλά. Σε ένα τηγάνι βάλτε λίγο βούτυρο και ρίξτε λίγο από το μίγμα μέχρι να σχηματιστεί μία λεπτή κρέπα. Γυρίστε για να ψηθεί και από την άλλη πλευρά. Συνήθως η πρώτη κρέπα είναι αποτυχία, εκτός κι αν είστε τυχεροί. Σερβίρεται ζεστή με χυμό λεμονιού και ζάχαρη, ή με κανέλλα και μέλι, ή με κρέμα και φρέσκα φρούτα, ή με Μερέντα, φιλέ αμύγδαλα και κρέμα γάλακτος. Γιάμ γιάμ.

250 gr. flour

500 gr. milk

3 eggs

a pinch of sugar

Mix the flour, the eggs and the sugar adding the milk and stirring well. In a frying pan add a bit of butter and then pour a bit of the mixture to make a thin pancake. Flip on the other side. Usually the first pancake is a failure, unless you are lucky. Serve warm with lemon juice and sugar, or cinnamon and honey, or cream and fresh fruit, or indulge in Nutella, sliced almonds and fresh cream. Yum yum.

Today (like every day the last period -or is it the last few years, really ?)- it is a very difficult day for Greece. Sending my thoughts, prayers, and a bit of green for hope...

thanks to beloved friends like Christos & Iro, I can still be surprised when I come back home: this is what was waiting for me in a parcel. AND it is bilingual. Genius. Let the battle begin!  

Little Miss Vintage

Οι επιλογές ανήκουν στην κόρη μου για σήμερα: παιδικά vintage φορέματα από τις δεκαετίες 1930, 1950, και 1960. Είμαι υπερήφανη με το στύλ της. Μπορείτε να τα βρείτε στο dorothea's closet vintage (τα συγκεκριμένα έχουν πωληθεί αλλά θα βρείτε σίγουρα κάτι που θα σας ξετρελάνει)




My daughter picked these vintage looks today: dresses from the 1930's, 1950's and 1960's. Really proud of her style. Find at dorothea's closet vintage(they are already sold but you can find    amazing clothes anyway)

Guinness made in Greece

       

     a winter night stroll in downtown Athens, all the way to Ermou street, up until Monastiraki for a pint of the black stuff at the James Joyce Pub. slàinte or geia mas!

Farewell, Theo

γιατί κάποτε στα Εξάρχεια μου ζήτησες να σου πώ ένα ανέκδοτο και μετά μου ζήτησες να γίνω το κορίτσι της ταινίας σου (όσο πιο κοντά έφτασα ποτέ στη δόξα). 1987 περίπου. θυμάμαι πάντα το γέλιο σου (μετά απ΄το ανέκδοτο που σου είπα). Και τα τοπία στην ομίχλη και στη βροχή, πάντα, με ένα τρόπο ανεξήγητο, επαναλαμβάνουν καρέ-καρέ πλάνα από τη μεγάλου ή μικρού μήκους πραγματικότητα μας...μακάρι  

Καθαρώτατον ήλιο επρομηνούσε
Της αυγής το δροσάτο ύστερο αστέρι,
Σύγνεφο, καταχνιά, δεν απερνούσε
Τ’ ουρανού σε κανένα από τα μέρη∙

Handmade Shoes: Try this at home

                         

The rise of mums who make their own shoes for their babies (some more successfully than others that they made it a business) is a phenomenon. In order of appearance, adorable handmade shoes for babies by bitsy blossom, Lippy Lou Shoes, twogirlspatterns, Buster BooKids, designlab443, and Bella Baby Boutique.  

Fig Jam/ Μαρμελάδα Σύκο

1 kg mature figs

800 gr sugar

3 tablespoons lemon juice
a pinch of cinnamon


Peel the figs from their skin and mash them with the sugar into a bowl. Transfer into a casserole and bring to the boil adding in the end the cinnamon and the lemon juice. The jam is ready when it is not "runny". When cooled down put into glass jars and keep them in the fridge.

1 κιλό ώριμα σύκα

800 γραμμάρια ζάχαρη

3 κουταλάκια χυμό λεμονιού
λίγη κανέλα


Ξεφλουδίζουμε τα σύκα και τα λιώνουμε σε μια λεκάνη μαζί με τη ζάχαρη (πουρέ). Τα βάζουμε σε σιγανή φωτιά μέχρι να βράσουν και στο τέλος προσθέτουμε το χυμό λεμονιού και την κανέλα. Η μαρμελάδα είναι έτοιμη όταν "δέσει". Όταν κρυώσει την βάζουμε σε γυάλινα βαζάκια και την διατηρούμε στο ψυγείο.

House of Memories: Before

Amid post-doc application forms, nappies, books, playdoh marathons, and mountains of clothes stoically waiting to be ironed, in a house full of newly founded girly anima and childish exuberance, the thought that has been occupying the mind is another house: an empty house. A house full of memories of long summer holidays, of laughter and occasionally of tears. As it awaits its refurbishment, it very often sends messages-reminders through the Ionian Sea to come soon and occupy it again. This is its "before", or to be more accurate, its current state: dusty, decadent, in need of architectural TLC from its descendants. It is a house "interrupted" (as the late Derrida would have it). So, it will resume in all its glory. Shortly.
